The Outstanding Features of Anime Series
The many Japanese anime series show some similarities to North American cartoon programs, yet there are a great many differences that set them apart as well. Of course the first difference is the art work. Often even the background art is more lush and colorful, but it’s the anime characters themselves that really stand out. They are typically drawn with larger, more expressive and beautiful eyes than in other animated genres. And this means they can better embody another element that you will find in anime but not always in North American animated series; the deep emotion that accompanies the often more complex and intense stories.
This complexity isn’t always visible at first glance, for some anime series. For example, in the Sailor Moon series, the main character was often very silly. Yet Sailor Moon, probably the most beloved anime girl in the world, also had moments of nobility and strength. The plot of this anime frequently veered between rather fluffy episodes and scenarios where this character or her companions might need to make deep personal sacrifices to save the world. This is a strong feature of anime; extreme silliness in one episode followed by heart-wrenching drama in the next.
Characters in series like the Bleach anime or Naruto (probably the most popular title in the world) have their silly moments too, but these are fewer. In each of these series, the main character learns new martial arts skills, such as Ichigo in Bleach acquiring supernatural fighting skills, while Naruto is learning Ninja powers. But while they might have ridiculous moments in the middle of an episode, these anime series concentrate more on the battles and quests each character must undergo, either to save a comrade, save a village or grow as a person.
However, one anime series that stands out from the others is Death Note. There are no silly moments in this series, barely any lightness at all. Viewers follow the descent into megalomania and madness, despite the good intentions with which he begins, of a young man who accidentally acquires the power of life and death over people. This is one of the favorite anime titles of all, despite its unrelenting dark themes. If there are silly series of anime at one end of the spectrum, Death Note stands at the other end. But almost all anime touches, to some degree, on the very themes Death Note addresses. And this is what makes anime so different from many other genres of animation.
